Reach Out and Read in MEDiC Free Clinics
Reach Out and Read (ROR) is a national program that supports children’s language and literacy development, which is essential for young children to be on schedule with their learning progress before they begin school. Studies have shown that promoting pediatric literacy leads to significant improvements in preschool language scores, which is a good predictor of later literacy success. The ROR program has been adapted to fit MEDiC’s unique population of patients, primarily the homeless. Health profession students read to children during clinic nights, instruct parents about the importance of reading to their children and give each child a new book.
