The Wisconsin Idea in Action

J. F. Crow Institute for the Study of Evolution (formerly Evolution Initiative)

The Crow Institute was launched in 2010 in honor of the world-renowned UW-Madison geneticist, James Crow. The Institute provides training opportunities in evolutionary biology for graduates and undergraduate students, outreach programs for the public on Darwin Day, discuss and build curricular materials for best practices in teaching evolution, and to provide a weekly seminar series and a reading group for the evolution community and the public. Each of the above activities is designed to serve the campus community and the public in teaching, research and outreach. The Crow Institute is an outgrowth of the Evolution Initiative founded in 2004 on the UW-Madison campus by David Baum, Professor in Botany.

Outcomes

The mission of the J. F. Crow Institute for the Study of Evolution is to draw evolutionists and students across campus together to discuss research, teaching, and promote outreach. The Institute has a robust ongoing program including curriculum development for graduate and undergraduate students, an evolution option for undergraduates, teacher workshops, a weekly seminar series with invited speakers from outside and inside the campus, a weekly reading group where we reads books related to current issues in evolution, a journal club, a class on techniques in teaching evolution, and an annual outreach event, Darwin Days, held in February near Darwin's birthday. We also promote other outreach events together with other groups on campus.
