Training in Urban Medicine and Public Health (TRIUMPH)
TRIUMPH recruits and prepares UW medical students to become community-engaged physician leaders to promote health equity within disadvantaged urban communities. Students learn from and work with local leaders to explore community assets, risk factors and the social determinants of health. TRIUMPH students integrate and apply clinical, community and public health skills with diverse populations in historically disadvantaged communities throughout Milwaukee. They work in partnership with community leaders and organizations such as the Milwaukee Health Department, community health centers and others to conduct service-learning projects to promote the health of defined populations.
Outcomes
Medical students are well-prepared and committed to work with urban, disadvantaged communities. All graduates have entered residencies serving urban medically underserved populations, most have selected primary care careers, many have pursued MPH degrees and/or global health experience. Some graduates have remained in or returned to Wisconsin to work and practice. Recent graduates have shared: "I have become part of the community." "TRIUMPH reinforced my desire and gave me the confidence and skills to work with disadvantaged urban populations." "I learned that the most important thing about a project is building relationships." Community partners welcome TRIUMPH students who are advocates to enhance community health.
