ReaLens, LLC Collaboration with Design of Articial Eye Lenses
Current artificial eye lenses aren’t designed to mimic natural lens function. Consequently, patients gain unobstructed vision, but require glasses to help them focus. ReaLens LLC, a Wisconsin start-up, developed a biomimetic artificial lens, which takes into account the way eye muscles control lens curvature. ReaLens, LLC asked Professor James Blanchard and Researcher Carl Martin to evaluate its performance. The two built fluid/structural models for the mechanics of the lenses to predict how a typical lens would respond to eye muscle stimulus. Their calculations indicated that, with some modification, the lenses should meet the goals of the designers.
Outcomes
An improved artificial eye lens.
