How German Is American? Poster and Interpretive Brochure Project
Free outreach events in seven Wisconsin counties were held for the How German is American? project, for which UW-Madison faculty and staff produced a 24"x36" poster featuring 20 diverse images reflecting the different ways that German-speaking immigrants to the U.S. and their descendants have affected and been affected by American culture. The images are interpreted in a 48-page companion brochure. The goal of the project is to inspire viewers and readers to understand that multiculturalism in America involves more than just tangible things like food and music. Funding for the project was provided by a grant from the Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany in Chicago.
Outcomes
Organizers produced 5,000 copies of the poster and several hundred copies of the brochure. All of the materials are available over the "How German Is American?" Web site.
