Greening of Willy St.
Students were tasked with creating ideas for "greening" Williamson St. here in Madison. This street, also known as Willy St., is slated for reconstruction and the city wanted ideas on how to make it a "greener" street. The students looked at five areas: pavement, storm water runoff, sidewalk, vegetation, and business relations.
Outcomes
The group came up with a recommendation based on research for each of the areas mentioned above. Pavement use was deemed to be asphalt for economic reasons as anything else would use up all of the funds. The recommendation for storm water runoff was to use both catch basins and rain gardens. The conclusion for sidewalks was to use FilterPave for sidewalk surface along the street. The group’s recommendation for vegetation was to save as many existing trees as possible as well as narrowing the sidewalk in order to make larger terraces for trees. The final recommendation for the business relations was too hire a point person who would be the liaison between the business along the street and the city.
