African Storytelling on Wheels
The African Storytelling on Wheels program was designed to create a greater appreciation of the legitimacy and vibrancy of African cultures and the capacity of African traditions to speak to human aspirations and dilemmas. It encourages students of African origin to take pride in the oral literacy tradition of African culture, and share it in the form of storytelling. Trained UW student storytellers present African folktales in translation while dressed as storytellers from the country from which the tales derive. The program is designed for Wisconsin schools that lack racial diversity.
Outcomes
The program engages in global diversity outreach to hundreds of elementary school children across Wisconsin. Topics addressed include: political and ecological geography of Africa; oral traditions; material culture; music and dance; African philosophy and ethics; and language.
