Nutrient and Pest Management Program (NPM)
The University of Wisconsin Nutrient and Pest Management (NPM) Program connects farmers and researchers on key issues of profitability, practicality, and environmental impact of crop production practices and cropping systems. The NPM provides an exchange of information about agricultural practices that support a sustained family farm system and that protect water quality in Wisconsin. The program also strives to develop practical outreach programs to promote successful on-farm adoption of new research results. NPM uses close linkages to the research base of UW-Madison, local, state and Federal agencies in charge of resource protection, as well as the local farming community.
Outcomes
The NPM works with farmers to adopt nutrient management practices as well as creates publications and multimedia that provide people with tools for making effective pest management decisions. In conjunction with the Wisconsin Crop Production Association, the NPM develops and delivers programs that increase the professionalism of agricultural input applicators. They are also involved in the refinement and educational delivery of the SNAP-Plus nutrient management planning software program. From 2000 to 2009, as a result of local delivery of nutrient management farmer education workshops, over 2,900 producers farming approximately 889,000 acres in 53 counties have received in-depth education on nutrient managment planning.
