Exploration by Design
Exploration by Design is a series of summer camps held at UW-Madison through the School of Engineering and the Midwest Alliance group. The camps are designed to help high school students with disabilities and their parents understand the transition to college. Throughout the duration of the camps, parents meet with staff from UW-Madison, Madison Area Technical College and the Madison Metropolitan School District to discuss the living and learning environment at college, while students explore the sort of topics and assignments that await in college engineering courses. Each summer Exploration by Design holds four separate camps with 10-20 students and their parents. Camp topics include How Stuff Works and How CAD Works.
Outcomes
Parents and students are presented with options, such as technical schools, community colleges and other paths to a career that may fit better, even for students whose interest in science brings them to the Madison camp.
