Odyssey Project
The UW Odyssey Project provides a free six-credit English literature course to adults near the poverty level, giving them a chance to find their voices and get a jump start at earning college degrees they never thought possible. The project is headed by UW faculty, staff and students, with collaboration from Madison Public Library and various private donors and foundations.
Outcomes
Graduates of the program report life-changing effects, including new motivation to continue their schooling. Of our 400-plus alumni, 81% have earned college credits or professional/technical certifications beyond the six credits they earn in Odyssey. Additionally, 23% of our alumni are currently enrolled in college and working towards achieving their educational goals. After completing Odyssey, 100% of the students believe that their writing skills improved and 98% felt more academically prepared for college. They also report seeing positive effects on their children's school performance. Two thirds of our students believe their experience in Odyssey heightened their children's interest in attending college.
