Allied Drive Literacy Time
Since 2004, a team of graduate students at the Information School along with faculty, campus librarians, and undergraduate students have provided literacy programming at the Allied Drive Learning Center after school program for over 400 children in grades K-3. These programs provide an educational opportunity for UW-Madison students in developing and implementing literacy programs, as well as providing literacy practice for the Allied Drive Learning Center children in a safe, comfortable, and encouraging environment. Because this neighborhood has limited access to public library services, they also partner with Madison Public Library Readmobile, which provides the children an opportunity to check books out.
Outcomes
Participating Information School students have asserted that this experience is invaluable and has prepared them to develop and implement community outreach programming as future professional librarians in Wisconsin and throughout the U.S. The director and staff at the Allied Drive Learning Center have reported that the children participating in the program are better and more engaged readers and express enjoyment in reading. The program has benefitted from past grant support from Friends of the UW-Madison Library, Madison Gas & Electric, and Target. Since 2008, over 1,00 books have been placed in hands of these children each April or May to help the children avoid the summer slump in reading and simply to provide books to the families.
