Improving Language and Cognitive Outcomes in Bilingual Children
UW Professor Margarita Kaushanskaya’s research aims to examine how input in two languages affects language and cognitive outcomes in children, both those who are typically developing and those who have a language impairment. It also aims to improve diagnostic practices for children who speak English as a second language, and who therefore cannot be tested using tools developed for monolingual English-speaking children.
Outcomes
What is the best way to expose a child to two languages? Is there an optimal exposure strategy, and if so, does the same strategy work equally well for children with typical language skills and for children who are at risk for language impairment? As the Wisconsin population includes more children growing up speaking languages other than English, this work can benefit the state’s educational practices and policies.
