Bringing Music to underserved students: Piano Pioneers Program
The UW's Piano Pioneers program provides scholarship piano lessons (and practice instruments if needed) to children and adults in the community who can’t afford the cost of full lessons. Lessons are held at the UW-Madison Mosse Humanities Building, and teachers are graduate students in the UW-Madison piano performance and pedagogy programs. Lesson times are flexible and are arranged between each student and teacher. The program receives generous support from the Ira and Ineva Reilly Baldwin Wisconsin Idea Endowment, and the Evjue Foundation helps make this program possible.
Outcomes
Since 2008, the program has taught 14-23 students a year with some students having continued lessons. In total, they’ve taught around 37 students and for 2011-12 the program is teaching 23 students (coming to UW for lessons) and about 25 students at the Boys and Girls Club in Madison.
