Housing assistance research
Three UW-Madison research affiliates received a grant from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation to examine the effects of Section 8 housing subsidy receipts on the economic self-sufficiency of low-income families and the education opportunities of their children. The $194,00 grant will assist Robert Haveman, Thomas Kaplan, Barbara Wolfe and Deven Carlson study the effects of housing voucher receipts on employment and earnings, family composition, neighborhood quality and the use of other government programs as part of the foundation's How Housing Matters to Families and Communities competitive grant program.
Outcomes
Haveman, Kaplan and Wolfe have been working on the evaluation of the Section 8 housing program for five years, and this grant will extend their work for an additional 18 months. The project has resulted in publications in the Journal of Urban Economics, the Journal of Public Policy and Management, and the Journal of Housing Economics.
