The Wisconsin Idea in Action

Forgiveness Education in Milwaukee's Central City

Since 2003 Robert Enright and his colleagues have been providing forgiveness education programs for charter schools in Milwaukee's central city. Research over the past two decades shows that as people learn to forgive, their anger reduces significantly. Given the challenges of poverty and oppression in the central city, the students are at-risk for unhealthy anger. Dr. Enright's research shows that when regular classroom teachers use professionally-produced forgiveness curriculum guides for one hour a week for about 12-15 weeks, the students' anger reduces to normal levels. Teachers also report that their own teaching improves and that classroom climate becomes more cooperative with the advent of forgiveness education in the classroom.
