The Wisconsin Idea in Action

The Mapuche Indigenous Community of Nicolas Ailio and the Chilean State

Professor Florencia Mallon carried out a collaborative ethnography with the people of the Mapuche community of Nicolas Ailior and the Chilean State. She worked with members to write the history of the community. When the book was accepted for publication by Duke University Press, the advance on royalties was given back to the Mapuche people and they were able to use it as their contribution for a clean water project carried out by the Chilean government in their community. The community also received the money that came with the Bolton-Johnson book prize Professor Mallon won from the Conference on Latin American History.
