Promoting Double Reed Instrument Culture in Wisconsin Schools
The oboe and the bassoon play a key role in most musical repertoires since the birth of the modern orchestra in the mid 18th century. They are both absolutely vital to any educational music program that involves chamber music, operas, orchestral works or contemporary music. Professor Marc Vallon has visited 25 middle and high Schools in Wisconsin, mostly in Dane County, involving approximately 1200 students of the band programs. Professor Vallon plays a short concert with his bassoon, talks about the instrument and has a few students try it in front of their peers. Long term, Professor Vallon would like to geographically expand this outreach activity and involve other UW oboe and bassoon colleagues.
