Healthy Children, Strong Families (HCSF)
Healthy Children, Strong Families (HCSF) is an ongoing project working with American Indian communities in Wisconsin and around the nation. Begun in 2005 with the aid of a Wisconsin Partnership grant, it is now in its second round of NIH funding. HCSF works with families of pre-school age children to build skills and knowledge about healthy nutrition and active lifestyles. Most recently it has added stress reduction and better sleep as key components. The project sends a series of 12 lessons including books, games and practical items to assist in putting new knowledge and skills into practice. Its goal is to help stem the high rates of diabetes and other chronic diseases related to obesity that are prevalent in American Indian communities.
