Post-Closure Protocol Study
In collaboration with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, the Wisconsin Department of Commerce and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), UW-Madison faculty and students recently completed a project to assess the effectiveness of the state's reliance on "natural attenuation" as a strategy for dealing with groundwater contaminated by former spills or leaks of petroleum. The project included a review of data collected from over 100 sites and new field data collection by installation of temporary wells and sampling points at 10 sites.
Outcomes
Results of this project were used in development of guidance for regulators and consultants who are working to protect the public from health risks associated with contaminated sites.
