Nonprofit Board Leadership and Development
This course is designed to provide an opportunity for graduate students to serve on nonprofit boards, learn about the roles and responsibilities of board members and extend student networks. Reciprocally, nonprofit organizations and their boards benefit from having access to more diverse board members. The course was created and has been instructed by the director of the Bolz Center for Arts Administration (School of Business). Units with students participating have included MBA centers, School of Human Ecology, La Follette School of Public Affairs, School of Education, CALS and Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies. This two-semester, graduate service learning course is the first of its kind at UW–Madison.
Outcomes
Graduate students gain practical experience serving on a nonprofit board and develop leadership skills as they continue in their careers. Nonprofit boards and organizations gain skills and expertise contributed by the graduate student through participation on the board and a special project completed with the executive directors and board chair. Students further develop professional networks, while nonprofits establish contacts with potential future board members.
