Wisconsin Planetarium Connections
The Wisconsin IceCube Particle Astrophysics Center (WIPAC) has forged multiple partnerships in an attempt to create high-quality productions and build a statewide planetarium network. WIPAC partnered with the Milwaukee Public Museum to produce a full-dome planetarium show about construction and operation of the IceCube Neutrino Observatory at the South Pole in Antarctica. The video, which will be available November 2013 for national and international release, focuses on how UW–Madison, which led the project, is contributing to a new understanding of the Universe. In addition, WIPAC has developed a proposal for a digital dome network in Wisconsin, in an effort to update and modernize the planetariums in the University of Wisconsin System.
Outcomes
These projects benefit the state by creating engaging and exciting content about IceCube, an overwhelmingly successful Wisconsin project, and by working to update the state’s planetarium system to provide learners around the state with cutting-edge technology to explore their world. Updating planetariums would turn current facilities into digital learning environments, allowing them to serve cross-disciplinary purposes.
