Upward Bound at UW–River Falls
Faculty and staff at the Wisconsin IceCube Particle Astrophysics Center (WIPAC) help organize and implement math and science content in the Upward Bound program at the University of Wisconsin–River Falls (UWRF). The program provides an eight-day course for low-income, underrepresented high school students. Students use hands-on, inquiry-based methods to learn astronomy, mathematics and physics concepts. Currently in its sixth year, Upward Bound leverages partnerships with the IceCube Neutrino Observatory, the Knowles Science Teaching Fellowship (KSTF) and the PolarTREC program. In addition to WIPAC personnel, KSTF teachers who have traveled to the South Pole to work on IceCube and UWRF secondary education majors participate.
Outcomes
The Upward Bound program provides an exciting, hands-on opportunity for students to learn about science and math through inquiry and investigation. It also provides teachers and future teachers experience in designing engaging curriculum.
