Binaural Hearing and Cochlear Implants in Children and Adults
UW-Madison Professor Ruth Litovsky's research focuses on how people are able to hear in complex, noisy environments, such as classrooms. The research studies the problems faced by persons who are unable to hear well with both ears. One of the focal points is that of deaf persons who receive cochlear implants and the implications for their success and ability to hear. This research takes place at the UW-Madison Waisman Center, where Litovsky directs the Binaural Hearing and Speech Lab.
Outcomes
The research from this group has resulted in health care reform regarding the availability of cochlear implantation in children and adults. The research has provided guidelines about age at which medical care is recommended and testing outcomes to evaluate success. The research also has implications for technological applications of health care in the area of deafness and hearing loss in the state.
