Club Scrub
Grant Regional and Local EMS initiated a Club Scrub program. Local middle school students interested in health careers participated in weekly events at the hospital and EMS. Each week, the students visited a different department (surgery, lab, physical therapy, etc.) where staff explained their work and the students engaged in hands-on activities such as being inside a CAT scan and inserting airway tubes into mannequins. Programs like this are an effort by communities to grow their own health care providers as a way of meeting provider shortages common in rural areas. This project was made possible by a 2011-12 Rural Community Grant from the Wisconsin Office of Rural Health.
