Iowa County Kids First
The Iowa County for Kids First Team (Upland Hills Health, Dodgeville Elementary School and Iowa County Health Department) responded to the growing childhood obesity problem by implementing an evidence-based nutrition and fitness program in Dodgeville Elementary. The outcome measure was the average BMI for students in grades three through five. They will continue to track this as future classes participate in the program. Activities included a computer based, individualized system to track activity and eating habits (used by 232 students), constructing a school walking trail (used by 400+ students) and a parent/child program. This project was made possible by a 2011-12 Rural Community Grant from the Wisconsin Office of Rural Health.
