Public Humanities Fellowship
The Center for the Humanities’ Public Humanities Fellowship Program provides humanities graduate students with enriching experiences outside of academia that reflect and support their research while contributing to the vitality of organizations in the Madison community. This program is open to PhD candidates in the humanities, who bring to their Fellowships a host of skills and knowledge drawn from their scholarly work. Partner organizations provide Fellows with opportunities to undertake significant projects and programs, and ensure that they receive appropriate mentoring. In addition to providing new experiences for Fellows and host organizations, the program also seeks to enhance the value of the humanities in the public sphere.
Outcomes
Outcomes for the Fellowship program are two-fold. First, Fellows have contributed a great deal to their host organizations and have created, managed, and evaluated dozens of successful public programs, including Madison Children's Museum "A Day in a Kid's Life" social media program in spring 2014, the development of the Yahara Music Library for the Madison Public Library, and numerous radio programs and related public events for WPR's "To the Best of our Knowledge." Second, the Fellows have learned new skills that will be essential in preparing for employment both within and outside of academia. They have discovered how the research, writing, teaching, and project management skills developed in graduate school translate into other fields.
