Pasture Partnership With Organic Valley
A partnership between Organic Valley Farms, located in La Farge, Wisconsin, and UW-Madison researchers is working to help organic farmers meet the new organic pasture regulations. The new regulation states that 30% of the dry matter a cow eats during the grazing season must come from pasture in order for the milk from that cow to be considered organic. The research is focused on making pasture more productive to make it easier for organic farmers to meet the new regulation. To begin the research, a survey was conducted to acquire a snapshot of the current health of Wisconsin pastures. Preliminary results show that testing the soil and managing the pasture for soil fertility are keys to producing productive pastures.
