There are currently 110 wineries and commercial cider makers in Wisconsin, and that number will only continue to grow. This is why Nick Smith was hired in March 2015 as UW-Madison’s first-ever wine and cider outreach specialist. Smith is interested in helping people get into both the winery business and the rapidly growing cider business in a way that will help small-scale growers compete with large cider makers. Educating growers through conferences, speakers and short courses on things such as which varieties of apples should be grown based on location and desired taste is how Smith plans to help Wisconsin’s cider and wine industries prosper.
