Microgrids Help Power Milwaukee Industry
UW-Madison researchers are developing a microgrid-based electric power and distribution system that has the potential to help bring economic stability to Milwaukee, a city whose poverty rate approaches 30 percent as of 2015. A microgrid is a small, self-contained electric power system that has the ability to connect and disconnect from a traditional power grid. This allows customers and utilities to save energy by giving them the ability to use both waste heat and locally generated electricity when available. Century City Business Park, the area this technology will support, is designed to serve advanced manufacturing and research in Wisconsin’s energy, power, and control industries.
