Research on AIS knowledge in Midwest lakes
The Department of Natural Resources has been aided by Bret Shaw, an associate professor in the Department of Life Sciences Communication. Shaw and researchers have studied the awareness of aquatic invasive species among individuals. Aquatic invasive species (AIS), are non-native species that attach themselves to the bottom of boats, bait buckets and other objects. They “hitchhike” to other bodies of water, causing harm to the natural aquatic environment. Shaw’s research team looked into where anglers may be receiving their information about AIS and how avenues of communication, such as through opinion leaders like bait sellers and tournament coordinators, could influence boaters and anglers to adopt behaviors that prevent the spread of AIS.
