Fishwerks
Michael Ferris, a Computer Sciences Professor and optimization leader at the Wisconsin Institute for Discovery (WID), is part of an initiative in collaboration with the Center for Limnology which addresses fish barriers within lakes throughout the Midwest. They found that it is more economical to coordinate barrier removal projects across the Great Lakes Basin, as opposed to at the local, county level. Research findings show that barrier coordination could potentially increase the amount of space accessible to migratory fish. The research team created a free, online tool called Fishwerks. Fishwerks uses state-of-the-art optimization techniques accessed via a web-based GIS interface similar to Google Earth, and is hosted on WID servers.
