Cultural mediator for Amish and Old Order Mennonite communities
Mark Louden, Professor of German and Director of the Max Kade Institute for German-American Studies, is a cultural mediator for the Amish and Old Order Mennonite (“Plain”) communities, working to address outsider misconceptions. A fluent speaker of Pennsylvania Dutch and a Mennonite, Louden serves as an interpreter for those uncomfortable using English. He is a member of an initiative by the UW School of Medicine and Public Health to improve health care delivery to Amish and Mennonite families. Louden is active in outreach across the state, nation and in Germany through presentations in schools, community groups, and historical societies, among other venues. He educates audiences about Amish and Mennonite faith, history and culture.
