University of Wisconsin African-American Athletes Oral History Project
This project deepens our understanding of the African-American experience at the University of Wisconsin by recording oral history interviews with black alumni of the UW Athletic Department, particularly from the 1950s and 1960s. African-American athletes were frequently among the university’s most visible minority students, and their experiences are a valuable part of UW history. Many black players during the 1950s and 1960s faced obstacles, prejudice, and discrimination on and off the field as they played games and pursued their education. Their stories deserve to be recorded so that future scholars have access to historical sources representing the full range of the UW community.
