Fortalezas Familiares, Spanish for “family strengths,” is a program designed in response to increasing rates of depression among Latinos. Fortalezas Familiares is an intervention for families in which the mother is battling depression. A 14-session program, the goal is to inform families about how depression contributes to familial issues and provide understanding of how the family can work together to improve well-being. Sessions are for the mother, caregivers and children ages 9 to 17. Another group is organized for children ages 8 and younger. Fortalezas Familiares takes into account the acculturative stressors and cultural barriers for Latino families. The program takes place in community and school settings in and near Madison.
