Small Scale Climate Models
Climate models are powerful tools for predicting global climate change, but they produce global scale information that is not always appropriate for regional or local-scale planning. Scientists Michael Notaro and David Lorenz at the Center for Climatic Research (CCR), and Dan Vimont, an Associate Professor in Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences and CCR, have developed methodologies to downscale these global models to local scales across Wisconsin, the Eastern U.S., and Canada. These data have been used by the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, National Park Service, etc. for planning activities. We are developing a 3-km regional climate model coupled to a 3D Great Lakes model.
