University of Wisconsin Speech and Hearing Clinic (UWSHC)
Individuals from at least 15 Wisconsin counties ranging in age from infants through octogenarians have received speech, language and audiology services through UW-Madison's Speech and Hearing Clinic. Services for evaluation and treatment are provided by UW-Madison graduate students under the direction of clinical professors in the department. These services are provided to agencies, such as Head Start, as well as to individuals with communication disorders. The services can be viewed as part of both education and health care. Through the various programs offered to clients, the clinic strives to improve the quality of life for individuals, their families and significant others.
Outcomes
The hearing of approximately 700 Head Start youngsters is screened and appropriate follow-up is provided each year. UW-Madison students having difficulty with learning a foreign language are evaluated to determine if they have a language or learning disability. Clients with a variety of speech, language and hearing problems usually improve after intervention and remediation.
