Statewide Digital Parcel Map Initiative
The Wisconsin Department of Administration (DOA) partnered with the UW–Madison State Cartographer's Office and the state's 72 county Land Information Offices to create a digital parcel database of 3.5 million parcels in the state, which is available to the public for free and as an online app. The database is in its 9th version as of 2023. The state’s 2013-15 biennial budget bill, Act 20, created the Statewide Digital Parcel Map Initiative.
Outcomes
A study of 7 states (including Wisconsin) committed to completion of statewide parcel programs shows that -- in addition to the efficiency that digital parcel data brings to tax assessment -- parcel data is the most information-rich database with the broadest utility to local, state, and federal agencies. Customers and clients for parcel data include the private sector, policy makers, individual citizens, and other government agencies. Statewide parcel data not only meets the business needs of the state, but provides data beneficial to many others.
