Summer Workshop on Atmospheric, Earth and Space Sciences
The Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) high school summer workshop features a five-day agenda in meteorology, astronomy, land remote sensing and geology with an emphasis on satellite remote sensing and weather forecasting. Participating students stay on the UW-Madison campus and experience college life while pursuing science education through hands-on activities guided by scientists, graduate students and professors. Offered since 1991, the workshop became self-sustaining in 2006 when a tuition fee was introduced to cover lodging, meals and transportation to field trip destinations.
Outcomes
Since 1991, this program has been providing young adults with a comprehensive introduction to Earth, atmospheric and space science careers during high school, at a time when they are considering college and career paths. As such, it serves as a solid pipeline into the scientific community and UW-Madison. The majority of participants indicate that they would recommend the workshop to others, and most go on to pursue science majors in college. Program graduates often volunteer as undergraduates and some have even returned as student employees at the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS).
