Caregivers of children with incarcerated parents receive informational support and guidance on how to talk with children, prepare them for visits, and cope with the emotions related to having an incarcerated parent. Children can watch a video with a new Muppet character, Alex, who has an incarcerated father. The video explains how Alex feels and he gets support from an adult and other Muppets. Messages to children include "you are not alone," "it's ok to have big feelings," and "it's not your fault." A randomized controlled study found that the biggest gains were in helping families talk about incarceration and preparing children to communicate or visit with their incarcerated parents.
