Veterinary Services for International Crane Foundation
This project sustains the Conservation Medicine Department of the International Crane Foundation in Baraboo (Sauk County). Our work in Conservation Medicine uses veterinary science to improve the status of cranes through various focuses such as: medical management of captive cranes at ICF, support of wild crane conservation at home and abroad, research and publication, and mentoring of veterinary students and resident trainees.
Outcomes
This project has helped sustain the captive flock of 120 cranes at ICF as a valuable source for public outreach on endangered species and ecosystems. The crane breeding program has supported the establishment of a reintroduced flock of endangered whooping cranes to Wisconsin, now numbering 100 birds. Since 2000, the ICF Conservation Medicine program has contributed to the qualification of 12 University of Wisconsin residency candidates in zoological medicine and hosted over 60 student and postgraduate trainees, including many from Wisconsin.
