Advancing Climate Science Education, Inquiry, and Literacy Across Rural Wisconsin Communities
Our project aims to inspire scientific, place-based inquiry and advance climate science education and literacy across Wisconsin’s economically disadvantaged rural communities. We aim to expand understanding of environmental issues by facilitating accessibility to climate researchers; incorporate data collection within the Global Learning and Opportunities to Benefit the Environment (GLOBE) program for comparison of climate phenomena and local environmental impacts; provide teacher/citizen scientist training for GLOBE protocol application at schools; and provide authentic K-12 research experiences by developing GLOBE special measurement protocols in collaboration with climate scientists to facilitate effective community climate adaptation.
Outcomes
GLOBE educator professional development workshops were led for the following WI schools and environmental centers: Aldrich Intermediate School, Beloit College, Beloit Learning Academy, Beloit Memorial High School, Blessed Trinity School, Butternut School, Cunningham Intermediate School, Fruzen Intermediate School, Gibraltar School, McNeel Intermediate School, Ridges Sanctuary, Southern Door County Middle and High Schools, and Welty Environmental Center. The Midwest GLOBE Student Research Symposium was held at UW-Madison in April 2023, bringing about 70 middle and high school students and teachers from Midwestern states.
