CIMSS Regional Assimilation System (CRAS)
The Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) Regional Assimilation System (CRAS) is a collection of computer programs designed to predict the weather. Worked on by UW-Madison staff and students, CRAS is unique in that researchers use satellite data to improve the accuracy of weather prediction. Recently, National Weather Service offices (both within Wisconsin and nationally) have started to use CRAS predictions operationally. The Wisconsin Department of Transportation also uses some CRAS products.
Outcomes
One of the most tangible outcomes of research with the CRAS model is the application of satellite data to improve the accuracy of forecasts. The use of data from the sounding instrument aboard U.S. geostationary satellites is a unique feature of the CRAS. This model is an excellent example of research transitioning into operational use for public benefit.
