Prison Writing Project
I teach three classes (fiction and poetry writing workshops) per year (fall, spring, summer) at Oakhill Correctional Institution in Oregon, Wisconsin. These classes currently last 12 weeks and are filled with as many as 12 inmates per semester. These classes are administered through the Oakhill Humanities Project, a nonprofit organization of volunteers dedicated to providing academic opportunities to the inmates at Oakhill. Other classes offered by Oakhill Humanities Project include History, Drama and Philosophy.
Outcomes
Higher GED and High School Equivalency graduation rates for incarcerated people and lower recidivism rates.
