Washburn Observatory Public Nights
The UW–Madison Astronomy Department offers free public viewings at the Washburn Observatory located on the Madison campus. The Open House sessions continue the tradition, dating to 1881, of teaching and supporting amateur astronomers and everyday citizens in the community. UW astronomy graduate students host Open House sessions giving community access to the university's excellent resources for studying the stars and to experience top-of-the-line equipment including the Observatory’s original refracting telescope.
Outcomes
The Open House sessions held every one to two weeks at the Washburn Observatory allow members of the community to observe and learn from university astronomers. Visitors can observe celestial objects using the historic 15.6-inch refractor. In addition, the sessions provide the opportunity for community members to ask questions about various astronomical events and occurrences such as meteor showers, solar flares and space probes.
