Free Melanoma/Skin Cancer Screening
Free skin cancer screening is done each spring, before people start enjoying the sunny weather. Screenings are held on the Capitol Square for the public attending the Farmer's Market. They also hold a free clinic once a month at Southside MEDiC Clinic which is supported by the Medical School. As such, screenings are taken on a walk-in basis. Faculty, residents, mid-level providers, nursing staff and classified staff all volunteer their time to provide this service to the public. This includes many dermatologists in the Madison area. The screenings are also supported by the American Academy of Dermatology. Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States, with approximately one million new cases diagnosed each year. Melanoma, the most serious type of skin cancer, will kill more than 7,600 people each year in the U.S.
