Public Child Welfare Training Project
MSW students participate in a public child welfare training program which includes a specialized curriculum and a field placement in public child welfare. Students selected for the program receive tuition and a monthly stipend. Upon graduation, they take jobs in public child welfare and are committed to work at least for the amount of time they received the funding. Since 2000, the program has had approximately 100 students take jobs in 27 different counties in Wisconsin. The program uses federal funds disbursed through the State of Wisconsin Department of Children and Families.
Outcomes
National studies show that child welfare workers are most likely to leave the field in the first two years. Of the students who have completed their work commitment through the UW-Madison program since 2000, 67 percent still work in public child welfare. Most of the remaining 33 percent are still working in the field, in positions with nonprofit organizations such as Big Brothers, Big Sisters.
