Wheelhouse Studios - Wisconsin Union
Wheelhouse Studios provides hands-on, multi-layered engagement opportunities in the arts. Formerly Wisconsin Union Mini Courses and the the Wisconsin Union Craftshop, the Studios provide non-credit, leisure learning opportunities, free art events, workshops and more that are hands-on and skill-based. The idea of an open studio arts facility in a student union originated here at UW-Madison. The "Union Workshop" opened in 1930, when Sally Marshall, a senior at the UW proposed such a facility in her senior thesis. The concept has spread to many other campus union facilities around the world.
Outcomes
Approximately 4,000 people participate annually in non-credit learning and hands-on arts events. Furthermore, there are employment/teaching opportunities for over 70 instructors annually. There are numerous personal stories of these experiences making a huge difference in people's lives.
