American Languages: Our Nation's Many Voices Online
At least a dozen Wisconsin counties have had outreach presentations from the American Languages: Our Nation's Many Voices Online project of UW–Madison's Max Kade Institute. The project is devoted to digitizing rare sound recordings, especially interviews with German and English dialect speakers, and making them accessible to the general public through a website and outreach presentations across the state. Many of the recordings were made in Wisconsin, and a team regularly holds presentations in communities where the recordings were made, often meeting descendants of interviewees, most of whom have no idea these recordings exist.
Outcomes
The Max Kade Institute has now completely digitized its sound archive and that of the Dictionary of American Regional English, comprising thousands of hours of material dating back to the 1940s.
