Small Business Development Center Assistance to Platypus Technologies, LLC
Dr. Barbara Israel of the UW School of Veterinary Medicine formed Platypus Technologies, a company focused on the development of liquid crystal detection technology, in April 2000 with two other UW faculty, Dr. Nicholas Abbott, a chemical engineer in the College of Engineering and inventor of the technology and Dr. Christopher Murphy, in the School of Veterinary Medicine. The team was aided by the Small Business Development Center ( SBDC), which allowed the company to successfully launch in 2001.
Outcomes
Today, Platypus Technologies markets gold coated surfaces and offers custom coating services. The company also manufactures and sells a line of cellular assays used in cancer research and in compound screening by pharmaceutical companies. Platypus liquid crystal detection technology is the basis for a variety of gas sensors and monitors that address market needs for occupational safety and environmental monitoring. The company is located in the Fitchburg Technology Campus.
