Role of Natural Habitats in Agroecosystems
UW-Madison personnel and community and government organizations are helping farmers in Arena, Plover, Stevens Point, Coloma, Friesland, Scandinavia, Rhinelander, Palmyra, Jefferson and Bancroft to produce Healthy Grown potatoes. This project aims to assess the agroecological value of non-crop lands on Healthy Grown farms so that appropriate management objectives can be incorporated into the certification. This portion of the overall project began in September 2005 and continues through August 2008.
Outcomes
Wisconsin farmers participating in the Healthy Grown program can market eco-friendly potatoes for the rapidly growing numbers of health and environmentally conscious consumers willing to pay premium prices for such products. This also gives the consumer additional choices and provides environmental benefits where the potatoes are grown.
